1974 Land Rover Series 3 109 Safari 6 Cylinder THJ 317N. This Vehicle is for a serious Land Rover enthusiast or collector it was being regularly used until engine started knocking - will need transporting/trailering away. Here we have a rare, original and unmolested Land Rover Series 3 109 (LWB) Safari 12-seater Station Wagon with factory fitted 6 Cylinder IOE Petrol Engine.
This truck is a real time warp as it still wears its original coat of factory limestone paint, it is full of period character and charm. Its a solid honest truck that has been cared for and well maintained over the years, it has not been restored or rebuilt. Nor does it have holes drilled everywhere or poorly fitted modifications.
It is as it left the factory in 74. The previous owners to myself had it for 20+ years as a breakdown truck at a local garage, seeing very little use. It was also used annually to tow a procession trailer in the local town parade. Since my ownership in August 2019, I have undertaken work to tidy up and preserve the truck without losing its originality. I have also swapped out the factory 2.6L for a 3 Litre from a rover P5.
If you know your Land Rovers, this is the best upgrade for these 6 pot wagons. (Further details below) I have rebuilt the bulkhead as it was full of poor repairs and very hole ridden.
Chassis has had rear crossmember/front dumb irons/outriggers previously; I have fitted a new front crossmember and repaired O/S chassis leg where required - Chassis is now solid. Brakes fully replaced in each corner and new stainless braided hoses fitted. I have blasted and painted 5 matching 5.5 LWB offset wheels, fitted with 235/85/16 Michelin XZL tyres. Period correct number plates and LR mud flaps have also been fitted. Genuine 61K miles - Mot history to support.
Extensive history folder included, containing previous Invoices and Receipts, MOT Certificates, record of work carried out. All photos of work undertaken, vehicle in use and previous owners use will be available to new owner. Engine is currently mildly knocking after being driven a short distance with oil pressure light flickering on. Knocking sounds to be the big ends may require new big end bearings and potentially a crank grind. This is only my best guess; I have not investigated the issue in any way. 3L engine covered 45 miles before knocking began. Tired original 2.6L engine has been removed and replaced with a Rover 3L equivalent 6-cylinder IOE engine.Visually there is no difference, just an increased internal capacity and power output. The healthy 3L engine was removed from a 1959 Rover P5 salon car. This engine was checked over, painted and then converted to fit the series land rover Flywheel housing/ Flywheel/ Rocker Cover/ Carb.
Mounting/ Sump/ Crankcase breather/ Chassis mounts/ Dipstick etc. The water pump was refurbished by J R Wadhams Rover Specialists, system flushed, and new core plugs fitted. The engine has also been fitted with a new electronic distributor and matched high-power coil. Exhaust manifold blasted and VHT Painted.Full Double S Stainless Steel Exhaust fitted. The station wagon wears its original patinaed limestone paint with pride, all its original doors and panels. Paint wearing through in places as youd expect after 50 years of use; however still presentable. One small area of damage to N/S front wing could be pulled out and tided up with not too much hassle. Bulkhead has been recently rebuilt and painted so is 100% rust free!
